Jaded Lover (Matt Wells)

In a world where genre means less and pleasure means most, Matt Wells takes his pleasure in pushing musical boundaries. The DJ, producer, and record label owner cut his musical chops in the city of Chicago. Curating sounds pulled from the vast pool of his subconscious, then broadcasting them with a thin candy coating of nostalgia. His knack for mining the past to be stylistically ahead of the curve is undeniable.

“I love nostalgia, but don’t use it as a hammer. More of a feather tickling your toes to get you moving on the dance floor,” Wells says of his penchant for picking tracks that echo his dark Balearic style.

Whether he drops disco, electro, house or techno, Wells may defy barriers but one thing is for sure: he will summon the rhythm within you to tunes you never knew you loved (or ones you forgot you knew). Always pushing forward with his own original productions and remixes that keep his sound fresh, will make you dance, and leave you wanting to come back for more.

“I have, and always have had, a deep desire to please the crowd. But I still love to pull them subtly out of their comfort zones,” says Wells.
“I came up in the era of DJing that had the DJ as a function of discovery. Algorithms are great and all, but nothing beats a trustworthy actual human curator to your night out.”

The repertoire at his True Mother Records is certainly no exception to these sentiments. With years of experience behind the turntables, Wells has honed a smooth digital voice all his own. During that time he has also produced in collaboration with a rotating group of artists. Known as Jaded Lover (production duo with Chris Doria, live band with Connie Yin and Mike Reger) or Such Pretty Losers (with The Gleez and Tim Lozny). He has also worked with featured acts including Jeremy Bastard from Autodrone, Marc Nelson, the Singer / Lyricist SaraJeanne, and Starlore (Abagale Fischer).

Today, Wells comes back with a streamlining of Jaded Lover and his eponymous DJ moniker. From the tongue in cheek synth-pop of “Watching Porno,” to stopping by the disco in “Bowels of Disco,” scaring you along with John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” then landing neck deep in the electro-industrial noise of Jeremy Bastard’s “Phantom Limb.” As Jaded Lover, Wells will certainly have the floor moving until the sun steals back the day.

Potions

Autodrone

Autodrone is an NYC-based band that formed in the latter 2000’s. They combine songwriting that draws upon the five members’ psychological damage, morbid interests, and broken hearts with influences drawn equally from 70’s Psych Rock, 80’s Post-Punk, and 90’s Shoegaze. From this miasma, they have forged a sound which is uniquely all their own.

Jeremy Bastard

Jeremy Bastard has been DJing in NYC for well over 10 years.  He got his start spinning gothic and industrial music at the weekly Tuesday vampire party Resurrection at Mantra (later renamed, True) nightclub on 23rd street.  Resurrection was the second weekly vampire party in NYC history (after Long Black Veil) and one of the first weekly weekday gothic events with a solid dancefloor.  Other notable gothic and industrial DJs that spun at Resurrection were DJ Ian FFord, DJ Carlos D. and DJ Charlie the Slut.  Also, it’s worth mentioning that DJ Xtine was one of the promoters for Resurrection along with Darenzia.

While DJ Jeremy’s roots are in gothic and industrial music, he is currently spinning a mix of electro, indie, new-wave, post-punk, and dead-disco grooves.

For the last five years, Jeremy has spun at two weekly parties (Disco Down @ Happy Ending on Tuesdays and NC-17 @ Lit on Thursdays), and has had many guest DJ spots in NYC (Motherfucker, Rated X, Trash, Girls and Boys) as well as frequent special appearances at Greenhouse, Juliette, all of the three floors of Webster Hall and elsewhere.  In addition to his weekly Tuesday and Thursday gigs, Jeremy has recently started spinning every Wednesday for Bruce Wells’s party, Anti Gravity  @ R-bar.

Traveling, Jeremy has spun to packed crowds in Reykjavik, Iceland, at NASA, and in Los Angeles (Dim Mak Night @ Cinespace, Check Yo Ponytail, Silver Factory Studios, The Room). In NYC and elsewhere he has spun along side Steve Aoki, Ted Shred, The Rapture, Designer Drugs, Grandmaster Flash, Ian FFord, A Place To Bury Strangers, Jason of Alchemy, Carlos D (Interpol), and David J (Bauhaus / Tones on Tail / Love and Rockets).

Recently, Jeremy’s Tuesday party Disco Down won an L-Magazine Nightlife Award for best new party. Jeremy was also nominated for “Best DJ” and was a “Feature” in the NYC edition of Time Out.

Jeremy (and his residencies) have been featured widely on many major photo blogs including, The Cobra Snake, Last Night’s Party, The Culture of Me, Nicky Digital, Ambrel, Driven By Boredom, Darkroom Deamons, and countless others including features in Spin Magazine, The Village Voice, L-Magazine, Time Out New York, Going.com, BPM, Urb, Paper Magazine, and plenty more!

Jeremy also founded the NYC based band Autodrone, where he writes and plays guitar.   Autodrone’s debut LP “Strike A Match” on Clairecords and sophomore effort “This Sea Is Killing Me” on True Mother Records have both garnered critical acclaim from the US, UK, and Europe.

Bad Swordfish

Bad Swordfish is the alter ego of veteran punk’n’roll frontman Brad Skafish. While Skafish may be found with a mic and guitar in your neighborhood dive bar, Bad Swordfish occupies the virtual cantina at the dead end of a wrong turn from the information superhighway.

Skafish has been playing to crowds with bands including the Figbeats, Hidden Dangers, and Forgotten Four for 20 years. He has shared stages with the likes of the UK Subs, Nectromantix, and Towers of London. Figbeats track “I’m a Rat” is featured in the coming-of-age-in-NWI film Regionrat.  Skafish also authored a series of children’s books and recently produced the debut album by pop-rock sibling act the Spotlight Sisters.

Bad Swordfish is less a rebirth than a pivot into new territory that was there all along. Rather than eschewing his rock past, Skafish seeks the Venn diagram intersection of the disco and the pit. Think Joy Division, think The Faint, think This Is Radio Clash. Better yet – don’t think at all. Empty your mind and get on your feet.

SaraJeanne Artist Photo 300

SaraJeanne

SaraJeanne has been singing since she could talk. Her kindergarten teacher reported she was, “a good student, but she never stops singing.” In her hometown in California, she began studying classical voice at 14, studying with Hawaii Performing Arts Festival founder, Val Underwood, renowned Australian coloratura soprano, Jennifer McGregor, and acclaimed soprano, Shigemi Matsumoto in Los Angeles. At 22, Sara abruptly quit classical music finding the structure and rigidity creatively stifling. A bit later, while at Sarah Lawrence College, Sara decided to take an elective in the theater department in Musical Theater writing. This songwriting workshop experience re-awakened Sara’s passion for music. From there, she recorded songs with the Americana band, Have Gun Will Travel, and also formed her own short-lived band, Barbara. Sara met Connie Y in 2016, the two hit it off, and soon, Sara, Connie, and Matt Wells started to collaborate. What will the future bring? Sara is learning to DJ, practicing guitar, and still always singing and writing. She looks forward to taking on as many future new projects as time will allow. Also, she’s a gemini, but don’t hold that against her.
